Jacob and Esau
Repentance 1.7.9 on PS5.
What you start with
The mechanics that actually govern this character.
- Two independent characters moving as one. Jacob: 3 red hearts, damage 2.75, Tears +0.277, range 5.00, shot speed 1.15, luck +1. Esau: 1 red heart and 1 soul heart, damage 3.75, Tears -0.1, range 8.00, shot speed 0.85, luck -1. Speed is shared and speed stat changes are only half as effective.
- They share coins, bombs and keys and nothing else: separate item pools, stats and health, two active items, two trinkets, two card/pill slots. If either one dies, the run ends.
- Hold Drop to freeze Esau in place while Jacob moves. One character walking through a door moves both; Curse Room door damage only hits the one who walked through.
- On 1.7.9 console you are on the classic control scheme: Jacob's active AND card are on the Item button, Esau's are on the Pill/Card button, and you hold Drop to switch between using actives and using cards. The 'better controls' remap is Repentance+ only and is not available to you.
How to play them
- Their real power is doubled item pickups. In rooms where taking one item removes the others - alt-path Treasure Rooms in Downpour, Mines and Mausoleum, and the Polaroid/Negative pedestals - line both brothers up and touch two pedestals simultaneously. Those alt-path floors are literally worth double.
- The same trick works on More Options / There's Options rooms and inside Death Certificate rooms, which is two items per room instead of one.
- Bombs: placing one bomb spends one but drops one under EACH brother. Line them up on a barricaded door to open it for a single bomb, or split them to double blast coverage.
- Room clear drop rate is computed from their combined luck, and their base luck is +1 and -1, so at base stats they clear rooms as if at 0 luck. Luck ups on either brother count.
- Protect the weak brother. It does not matter how strong Esau gets if Jacob eats a shot he cannot afford; treat the lower pool as the run's actual HP.
- Books and Bookworm are per-character: each brother needs three distinct books of his own, so a single Library only transforms one of them unless you reroll the pedestals.
- Flight matters more than usual. Even if only one brother has Transcendence, steer the OTHER one so the flying brother never snags on obstacles.
Items to hunt for
Strong on this character specifically, not just strong.
- Birthright (their own ??? mark reward, which you already have unlocked): whoever takes it gets copies of the other brother's three most recently collected passives. Grab it late, with the other brother already stacked.
- Star of Bethlehem: gives its stats to both brothers, effectively doubling the item.
- Technology Zero: strings electricity between the two brothers' tears even if only one owns it, turning their spread into a moving grid.
- Lachryphagy: both brothers' tears feed the same shot regardless of who owns the item.
- Gnawed Leaf on Esau specifically: hold Drop to petrify Esau while Jacob walks, then Jacob can slowly shove the invincible Esau around the room.
- The Found Soul trinket: when the ghost dies for one brother it still exists for the other, so swapping the trinket between them respawns it.
- Bone Spurs and Infestation 2 trigger off either brother's kills, so their combined DPS feeds one effect; any single resurrection item also saves both, so one Dead Cat or 1up! covers the pair.
Traps to refuse
Picks that are neutral or good elsewhere and bad here.
- Dr. Fetus on one brother: the other brother's ordinary tears collide with the bombs and ruin your aim. The wiki explicitly flags this one.
- Splitting a resurrection stack across both brothers expecting two lives - if they each hold the same revive item the game removes Jacob's copy first, so you do not get the redundancy.
- Speed items are half value on them, so speed-heavy pickups are worse than they look.
- Broken Shovel 1 and 2 must be held by the SAME brother to form Mom's Shovel. Key Pieces and Knife Pieces do combine across the pair; the shovel does not.
- Clicker, Judas' Shadow and similar transformations collapse them into one character: Esau's active item is deleted outright and his cards, pills and trinkets are dumped on the floor.
Cheese and techniques
Verified against 1.7.9 on console — anything patched, PC-only or Repentance+ only is called out rather than listed.
- Devil Deal underpaying is real on 1.7.9 and was changed in Repentance+. On this version a brother with 1 red heart container can pay a 2-red-heart deal, and a brother with 2+ containers and half a soul heart can pay a 3-soul-heart deal for that half heart. The missing hearts are not taken from the other brother.
- Gnawed Leaf on Esau gets you into Curse Rooms and opens Spiked Chests with zero damage: petrify Esau, push him through with Jacob.
- Two of everything from an alt-path Treasure Room makes Downpour, Mines and Mausoleum worth taking on almost any J&E run, even at the higher difficulty.
- The Mirrored World only needs one of the two to be The Lost; the other can walk in at full health.
- Dice Room warning rather than cheese: a 6-pip room rerolls BOTH brothers' items no matter who stepped on it, while a 1-pip room only rerolls the brother who triggered it. Also note the 1.7.9 softlock where resuming a save with Found Soul in Esau's trinket slot needs a controller - fine on console unless the pad disconnects.
Getting the marks
- Non-tainted, 14 secrets, all Hard marks unlocks Solomon's Baby.
- Their mark rewards are the most valuable set in the game for future runs, so do them early: Mom's Heart gives Double Baby, Isaac gives The Stairway, ??? gives Birthright, Satan gives Red Stew, The Lamb gives Damocles, Boss Rush gives Rock Bottom, Hush gives Vanishing Twin, Ultra Greed gives Inner Child, Ultra Greedier gives Genesis, Mega Satan gives Illusion Baby, Delirium gives Suplex!, Mother gives Magic Skin, The Beast gives Friend Finder.
- Mega Satan is straightforward for them since Key Piece 1 and Key Piece 2 combine even if the brothers carry one each.
- They are unlocked by beating Mother, so A Strange Door and the Ascent are already open on your file - the Beast mark is a routing decision, not an unlock hurdle.
